Papa Luna Herbal Tea
Papa Luna's Tisane is a medieval medicinal recipe that emerged from ancient Mediterranean pharmacological tradition. The original formula corresponds to a medicinal herbal preparation popularized by Pope Benedict XIII from his papal seat in Peñíscola, during his stay there between 1411 and 1423.
It's no surprise that Benedict XIII, known as Pope Luna, suffered from stress, headaches, and stomach ailments and turned to the herbal tea that bears his name to alleviate his discomfort. The situation of the Catholic Church during his reign was no less so. Completely divided, Pope Luna was the undisputed protagonist of the Western Schism and had to confront all the powers that be in Europe.
The medicinal concoction is considered a classic and traditional Valencian remedy, which was prescribed during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries as a proven effective remedy to prevent flatulence, headaches, stressful tension, and kidney ailments.
The recipe for Papa Luna's Tisane includes different seeds in exact proportions: coriander, anise, fennel, caraway, and cumin seeds, licorice and dittany roots, and cinnamon; all ingredients that can be found in the local area of Peñiscola and the nearby Serra d'Irta.
Cafés Bo has restored it so that it can once again be enjoyed in all its splendor.
